Smoke-free housing policies benefit the health and the safety of residents by eliminating dangerous chemicals emitted by secondhand and thirdhand smoke. Other benefits include the reduced risk of building fires and the decreased costs of rehabilitating rental units.

Smoke Free Illinois Act

Prohibits Smoking inside any Public Place or Place of Employment

On January 1, 2008 all workplaces were required to go smoke free. The Smoke Free Illinois Act prohibits smoking inside any public place or place of employment including but not limited to the following places: bars, restaurants, casinos, bowling alleys, retail stores, elevators, indoor theaters, office buildings, factories, banquet halls, concert halls, nursing homes, schools, private clubs, etc. Smoking is also prohibited within 15 feet from entrances, exits, windows that open, and ventilation intakes that serve an enclosed area where smoking is prohibited.

Resources Available to Help You Quit Smoking

JOLIET – Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., prompting the Will County Health Department to remind area residents that powerful resources are available to help those wishing to kick the habit. The Illinois Tobacco Quitline is a free, telephone-based cessation counseling service provided to Illinois tobacco users who want to quit smoking for good. Callers to the Quitline (1-866-QUIT-YES) can talk confidentially and free of charge to registered nurses and respiratory therapists, who are certified tobacco treatment counselors.

Smoke-Free Policy Implemented

On October 1, Joshua Arms of LSSI Senior Residence implemented a smoke-free policy, which will make its building healthier and safer by preventing smoking inside of the facility.  To commemorate the occasion, Joshua Arms, located at 1315 South Rowell Avenue in Joliet, hosted a smoke-free celebration early Monday.
