Ana L., a patient of Dolly Agba, APN, has been coming to the Will County Community Health Center for 14 years.  She is diabetic.  When she started coming here her blood sugars measured in the 400-500's, extremely high and serious numbers.  Now her fasting blood sugar is 70 to 75 and her last HbA1C, a measure of diabetes control in the last 3 months, is almost normal.  She says this is due to Dolly's persistence in getting her to make big changes and referring her to Silver Cross Diabetic Education Program.  But it was what Dolly said to her that made her realize she had better make some drastic changes.  Dolly told her if is she continues the way she is, that in two years her organs will stop functioning and she will not be around to raise her children.  Ana left that day with tears in her eyes and decided to make the changes for herself and her children.

At first it was very hard and she was always hungry.  She stopped eating pizza, bread and tortillas, and she stopped drinking diet pop.  She switched to eating turkey, fish, vegetables, yogurt and drank more water.  She started reading labels and decreased her portions.  Ana even notices changes in her face.  Her eyes don't look as tired because she is sleeping better at night and not waking up so much.  She is happy now seeing what the changes has done to her life.

Her family is encouraging her to continue and Ana is also making better food choices for her children so that she can teach them what to do to prevent getting diabetes themselves.  Dolly continues to motivate her and addresses her other health issues.  Ana will continue to make better health decisions for her family.
