Epidemiology can be considered the fundamental building block of public health since it is the study of the patterns, causes and effects of disease conditions in specific populations. This is accomplished through the operation of public health surveillance, field investigations, health assessments and epidemiological studies. Information from these activities are provided in a timely fashion to the Department, other agencies, researchers, and the public for identifying Will County residents at increased health risk, understanding the causes and recommending changes to prevent disease and injury.
