Environmental Health Water Program
The Environmental Health Division is the authorized agent for IDPH to conduct sanitary surveys and water samples of non-community public
water supplies (NCPWS - water wells which service more than 25 people more than 60 days a year). Will County has approximately 368
non-community water supplies, which are routinely sampled for bacteria and nitrate levels. In addition, the Environmental Health Division
also permits, inspects, and samples all new water wells installed in Will County. The Division is responsible for the assurance that all new wells
are sampled and that the sample results are interpreted. Applicable
state regulations for water wells and
NCPWS can be located on-line at IDPH's web site, www.idph.state.il.us.
Once at the IDPH home page choose the following path: "Laws & Rules" > "Current Laws & Rules" > "Environmental Occupations & Programs"
"Private Water Supplies".

Environmental Health staff must witness well sealing when any water well is no longer used. A licensed well driller is equipped to seal wells,
however a homeowner may seal their own well upon application with a detailed plan. Applications are available at any branch office and available
online.
The Environmental Health Division operates an Illinois Department of Public Health certified laboratory at the Joliet office, which accepts
water well samples from local well drillers and the public. The water samples can be analyzed for a variety of parameters. A list of parameters
and the applicable fees are now available on-line.
Samples are accepted from 8:30am to 4:00pm Monday through Thursday and 8:30am to Noon on Friday. Samples can only be accepted when
they are brought in on ice and in sample containers provided by the laboratory in order to comply with strict certification standards.
