Environmental Health Sewage Program

The Environmental Health Division is the authorized agent for IDPH to conduct all private sewage activities in Will County. Staff performs soil and site evaluations to determine soil suitability for the installation of private sewage disposal systems. Septic permits are issued and staff conducts inspections of all new or repaired septic systems to ensure the system have been installed according to the appropriate state and county regulations. The Will County Sewage Treatment and Disposal Ordinance is now available on-line and the IDPH Private Sewage Treatment and Disposal Code is available at IDPH's web site, www.idph.state.il.us. Once at the IDPH home page choose the following path: "Laws & Rules" > "Current Laws & Rules" > "Environmental Occupations & Programs" > "Private Sewage Disposal".

The Environmental Health Division's environmental geologist assists the County Subdivision Planning Division to responsibly plan and develop subdivisions on wells and septic systems. The geologist also provides invaluable assistance to well drillers and private sewage system designers.

Soil evaluation

Sampling technicians in the Environmental Health Division's certified laboratory help to assure continued compliance of discharging aerobic units by routinely collecting effluent discharges from the approximately 3,200 aerobic treatment systems throughout the county. The purpose of the sampling program is to ensure that the effluent quality meets the applicable state and county discharge limits. The discharge limits for individual mechanical septic systems can be found on-line in the Will County Sewage Treatment and Disposal Ordinance and in the IDPH Private Sewage Treatment and Disposal Code.

Sampling of aerobic unit

The Environmental Health Division currently works with municipal and county building departments to ensure that private septic systems are not impacted by property development. A septic verification may be required prior to the construction of a deck, a garage, an addition, or a swimming pool. Contact you local health department office for more details.
