Program Description
The Tobacco Control & Prevention program offers a variety of programs and services to assist adults and teens to quit smoking, to keep youth tobacco free and to eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke.
Program and Services Offered
Cessation programs:
The Freedom From Smoking program is an American Lung Association program designed to help people to quit smoking. It is based on the latest research on addiction and behavior change, this medically sound program addresses the difficulties of quitting with a sensitive, encouraging style and is delivered over the course of eight sessions. This program is offered in at variety of community locations and can be offered in a corporate setting.
The Illinois Tobacco Quitline is a specialized one-on-one over the phone cessation counseling program available Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Quitline offers support in a variety of languages as well as a TDD line for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. All services are completely confidential and free. Call 1-866-QUIT-YES.
The Not On Tobacco program is a school-based teen quit smoking program, typically offered in high schools or alternative schools. This program effectively covers the entire quitting process from analyzing why they started smoking to learning how to prevent relapses. This program uses a variety of multi-media experiences and participatory activities to get the teens involved in their quitting plan. It meets one class period each week for eight weeks.
Prevention programs:
Tobacco Control offers a variety of prevention programs for ages 4-18. These programs can be offered in after school programs, day care facilities, schools, and community settings.
Tar Wars is a one session prevention program with an optional poster contest for 4th and 5th grade students.
Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) is a program where teens are trained to present tobacco prevention messages on the dangers of smoking to youth in their school district.
Reality Illinois is an anti-tobacco youth empowerment movement designed to educate high school students on the health effects of tobacco use and the deceptive tactics that tobacco companies use to market to their products to youth.
Smoke-Free Illinois Act Education and Enforcement:
The Tobacco Control & Prevention program provides education to businesses and to the public regarding the Smoke-Free IL Act as well as the enforcement of the law and follow-up on all smoking complaints.
Health Fairs / Education:
The Tobacco Control & Prevention program can set up an educational table for health fairs and wellness events in the community as well as for corporations. An educational presentation can be developed or tailored to fit the needs of any target population.
All programs are open to the public, schools, corporations, and the community.
Coalition Mission Statement
The Coalition Toward A Tobacco-Free Will County works in collaboration to provide a tobacco-free future for all Will county citizens by promoting the elimination of environmental tobacco smoke, the prevention of youth initiation, and the offering of education intervention resources to assist smokers in their quitting efforts.
How Can The Coalition Staff Help?
- We can assist your company, school, or community in developing a tobacco prevention or quit smoking program.
- We supply tobacco literature and educational materials including brochures, pamphlets, workbooks, videos, etc.
- We provide quit smoking classes for adults and youth.
- We provide educational presentations on tobacco prevention and quitting.
