JOLIET – Lyme Disease is the most prominent of several illnesses carried by ticks, tiny blood-sucking insects that may be no larger than a poppy seed. With the arrival of warmer weather, the Will County Health Department urges hunters, campers, hikers, and others who spend time outdoors to be especially mindful of the risks posed by Lyme Disease and its potential complications. Lyme Disease is known to have infected more than 340,000 Americans since 1982, and scientists believe that total represents only a fraction of the actual incidence.

Pain-free Screening Can Save Lives

JOLIET – Science and technology are winning the fight against colorectal cancer, but many Americans still avoid simple screening tests that could save their lives.Cancers of the colon and rectum will kill more than 51,000 Americans during 2014, even though several safe and effective screening options can dramatically reduce personal risk. The Will County Health Department urges area residents, especially those over the age of 50, to consult a health care professional about the need for colorectal cancer screening.

NACo Prescription Discount Card Program

A No-Cost Alternative to Paying full Price for Prescriptions

Since 2009, Will County has teamed with the National Association of Counties (NACo), to offer a drug discount card program for Will County residents. The free discount prescription card is widely available to all Will County residents, and can be used to save an average of approximately 24 per cent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.

Community Health Centers, also known as Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC's) are non-profit, community-directed health care providers located in medically underserved rural and urban communities where health care resources are scarce. Health centers provide access to care regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.

Although vaccines can virtually eliminate many of the infectious conditions that killed and incapacitated at will in previous generations, parental indifference has taken its toll. More than 35,000 US pertussis cases were reported a year ago, making 2012 the worst year for whooping cough in America since 1959.
