Healthcare Navigator at Stepping Stones

Since January this year, a Healthcare Navigator / Certified Application Counselor has come to Stepping Stones twice a week. She helps people in treatment apply for a medical card under the Get Covered Illinois insurance program which is part of the Affordable Care Act. With a medical card, people have coverage for medical, dental, and vision services.

Lynda Larson

Our Healthcare Navigator is Lynda Larson. Her services here at Stepping Stones are provided by the Will County Community Health Center where she has worked for 16 years. She has been an Outreach Specialist since January 2016. Each month, she helps about 25-35 income-eligible people apply for insurance. She also helps them choose a managed care plan such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna Better Care, Illini Care, or Family Health Network.

Individuals coming to Stepping Stones for help with a substance use disorder often have difficulty getting care because they do not have health insurance. Having the Healthcare Navigator on site enables us to help individuals obtain coverage and gain greater access not only to substance use disorder treatment but to a full range of healthcare services.
